Frequently Asked Questions
The mission of Our Lady of Walsingham Academy is to form liberally educated Catholic ladies and gentlemen. We focus on the classics of Western thought and the interrelationships of timeless ideas. The best education appreciates truth, goodness, and beauty and helps students grow in the cardinal virtues of prudence, temperance, fortitude, and justice. Such emphasis produces articulate, clear-thinking, well-rounded, and joyful young people prepared to reflect Christ in the modern world.
The integrated curriculum of Our Lady of Walsingham Academy is designed to form well-rounded students, with exposure to truth and theories in all of the core academic disciplines. This exposure will form their minds in the truth which will prepare them for college, for work, and most importantly, for life. The rules, logic, and order of math discipline the mind in a way that clarifies and organizes thinking across the disciplines. Math at Our Lady of Walsingham Academy covers Euclidean geometry and algebra, all the way through advanced Calculus. Our science classes are a study of the physical world, that is, of God’s creation. We approach these subjects with wonder, beginning by looking up at the heavens, at the lights in the sky: Astronomy. Then we take a look at the world God created (Geology), the creatures he created (Biology), and the intricate substances of which all things are made (Chemistry). We end by gaining an understanding of the nature and properties of matter and energy (Physics).
We encourage athletics and extra-curricular activities as a way of fostering the fullness of life. Athletics in particular can strengthen physical and mental health as well as channel competitiveness in a way that builds teamwork and develops a sense of good natured fair play. Some intramural games are organized by the school, and OLWA students are eligible to play team sports at either Thomas MacLaren or St. Mary's High School. OLWA has also entered an ultimate frisbee league and will be looking into forming their own basketball team. All students, by virtue of the curriculum, will participate in choir, art, music, and drama.
Yes. Although there is a possibility in the future we may separate boys and girls for some core academic classes, the school currently is co-ed.
Catholic faith formation is foundational to the curriculum of OLWA, and the whole school prays together, attends daily Mass together, and celebrates the seasons and festivities of the Catholic liturgical year. All of our teaching faculty are practicing Catholics who have taken an oath of fidelity to the magisterium. OLWA is designed for Catholic families, though occasional exceptions may be made. We welcome students and families from all faith traditions who seek to join our community.
Our Lady of Walsingham Academy is committed to offering an outstanding high school education at an affordable cost to families. Tuition for the 2025-26 academic year is $8,400 per student. Families with siblings at Our Lady of Walsingham Academy may receive a discount. Payment plans and financial aid are available. Because tuition does not cover the full cost of an education at Our Lady of Walsingham Academy, families are expected to aid in our major fundraising efforts during the school year, including Online Giving Days and Our Lady’s Dowry Gala.
OLWA emphasizes human interaction and discussion as the primary mode of learning. With teachers as guides and primary source texts as anchors, the Socratic seminar discussion is the primary methodology of a classical education. Students may conduct some online research at home or type up their papers, but generally our classrooms are screen-free with the possible exception of projectors needed to display visuals to enhance class learning.
The issue of homework in modern education has increasingly garnered attention over the last few decades. At OLWA, we strive to maximize our learning during the day and limit homework to two hours or less each evening. We teach our students to build good study habits, avoid procrastination, and organize their time so that they can enjoy other activities, family time, and rest.
While we love to build on classical foundations when possible, incoming freshmen from all kinds of schools can be successful at OLWA. The freshman curriculum is designed to meet all students where they are and take them through four years of rigorous, exciting, energizing study that will prepare them for college as well as other post-secondary adventures. Specific recommendations to help individual students prepare for the curriculum will be provided as part of the admissions and enrollment process, as needed.
The graduates of OLWA have a great track record of admission into many excellent colleges and universities, especially Catholic liberal arts colleges. OLWA graduates also have gone on to secular universities, religious life, the military, the trades, or other sorts of work to build up the kingdom of God.
OLWA connects with Catholic liberal arts colleges and universities like Christendom, Franciscan, University of Dallas, Thomas Aquinas, and others to encourage their graduates to apply for teaching positions. National organizations promoting classical education such as the Institute for Catholic Liberal Education (ICLE) also have job boards for teachers and administrators to assist in networking.
Our Lady of Walsingham Academy occupies a previously underutilized portion of the Corpus Christi Catholic Academy building, 2410 North Cascade Avenue, Colorado Springs, CO 80907. The high school is entirely distinct from the grade school.
Our website (https://olwclassical.org/) includes a "Current Families" tab featuring the OLWA Parent-Student Handbook, uniform requirements, academic calendar, and school policies. Our headmaster (headmaster@olwclassical.org, 719-368-9131) is always eager to host visits for families/students considering enrollment. We look forward to meeting you and continuing the conversation, as you discern the best school for your son or daughter.
